NCDevCon Session Spotlight: Motion Control your Javascript with the Kinect

Motion control your javascript with the kinect

The keyboard is sooo 1980's. The mouse is sooo 1990's, touch screen is sooo last year. It's Kinect time! New interaction methods seem like they are popping up all the time. Some would say we're moving past the mouse, but what else is there besides the touchscreen? In the past two years, we've seen the launch of the Microsoft Kinect – a dual camera system that tracks movement. Initially we were just talking Xbox Games, but then desktop applications, and most recently – webpages with Javascript. In this session we'll explore using the Kinect in a webpage with Javascript. We'll explore what the Kinect is, how it works, and how to interact with your site.

About Ben Farell

Ben FarellBen Farrell is a Creative Developer currently working at Digitalsmiths, in Durham NC, specializing in digital audio and video on many platforms. He's helped clients release web based Flash and HTML5 video players as well as iOS and Android video apps –one such website winning an Emmy to add to his list of three past nominations.

Previously a“Flash Developer”, Ben has changed his focus not because any particular technology is dying –but because an insane amount of new technologies are cropping up. He's choosing to use this opportunity to explore and have fun with everything he can learn – whether it's Flash, Javascript, iOS, Android, Node.js, Python, or Open Frameworks.

Ben is a UI developer at heart, but not one who stresses over how many pixels round a corner is, or how perfect his wireframes are. Instead, Ben loves new and innovative ways to use graphics, sound, and interaction - which is why mobile, touch, and Kinect based experiences are so interesting to him.

As he has fun with music and audio, it should be no surprise that Ben is a Senior Producer at geek run Codebass Radio, produces a radio show called“The Shark Attack” and co-hosts a tech talk show called “Runtime Expectations”.

You can find him blogging at benfarrell.com, or listen to his radio shows at codebassradio.net and runtimeexpectations.com.
